Konjunktiv II: forms, würde and how to say 'would' in German
For unreal wishes, conditions and polite requests: Präteritum stem + umlaut + -e (hätte, wäre, käme); other verbs take würde + infinitive.
Rule
Konjunktiv II is the form for everything that is not real (yet): unreal wishes, unreal conditions, polite requests, advice and hypothetical comparisons with als ob. It is German's equivalent of English would / could / were.
The form comes from the Präteritum stem + umlaut (a, o, u) + the endings -e, -est, -e, -en, -et, -en: ich kam → ich käme, ich konnte → ich könnte, ich hatte → ich hätte.
In real usage only a small set survives as a one-word form: sein, haben, werden, the modal verbs, and a handful of strong verbs (käme, ginge, gäbe, wüsste, fände; bräuchte is colloquial — the standard form is brauchte). For all other verbs, German uses würde + Infinitiv: Ich würde sofort kündigen. With haben, sein and the modals the würde-form is not wrong, only uncommon: Wenn ich Zeit hätte is the normal choice, Wenn ich Zeit haben würde sounds clumsy.
Without wenn: you can drop the conjunction and put the finite verb first — Hätte ich Zeit, käme ich mit. (= Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich mitkommen.)
For the past there is exactly one form: hätte / wäre + Partizip II — Ich hätte gefragt, Wir wären geblieben; the auxiliary is the same one the verb uses in the Perfekt. With a modal verb you get the double infinitive: Ich hätte fragen können. In a subordinate clause the finite verb moves in front of that double infinitive: …, dass ich hätte anrufen können.

* wollen and sollen have no umlaut, so their Konjunktiv II is identical to the Präteritum; the context (or a würde-clause) shows which one is meant.
Common mistakes
- ❌ Ich würde gestern gern gekommen sein. → ✅ Ich wäre gestern gern gekommen. — the past is hätte/wäre + Partizip II, never würde + perfect.
- ❌ Ich hätte gestern kommen gekonnt. → ✅ Ich hätte gestern kommen können. — modals form a double infinitive in the past Konjunktiv II.
- ❌ …, dass ich anrufen können hätte. → ✅ …, dass ich hätte anrufen können. — in a subordinate clause hätte stands before the double infinitive.
- ❌ Er tut so, als ob er krank ist. → ✅ Er tut so, als ob er krank wäre. — after als ob the verb goes to the end and stands in Konjunktiv II.
- ❌ Wenn ich reich werde, würde ich viel reisen. → ✅ Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich viel reisen. — an unreal condition needs Konjunktiv II in both clauses.
