Two-part conjunctions in German: sowohl … als auch, weder … noch, je … desto
Correlative pairs like sowohl … als auch, weder … noch, entweder … oder: what they join, which half causes inversion, agreement and commas.
Rule
Two-part (correlative) connectors work as a fixed pair — drop one half and the link falls apart. What they can join differs:
- sowohl … als auch, weder … noch, nicht nur … sondern auch — usually two words or phrases inside one clause, but whole clauses too;
- entweder … oder, zwar … aber, einerseits … andererseits, mal … mal, teils … teils — phrases or whole clauses;
- je … desto/umso — two clauses only (the short form Je mehr, desto besser is an accepted ellipsis).
When a half opens a clause, its word class decides the word order.
- oder, sondern and aber are conjunctions in position 0. The clause after them keeps normal order: subject first, conjugated verb second.
- noch, andererseits, desto/umso, mal and teils are adverbs in position 1. They fill the first slot, the conjugated verb follows and the subject moves behind it (inversion).
- entweder opens the clause in position 0 (Entweder wir nehmen den Zug) or in position 1 (Entweder nehmen wir den Zug); weder takes position 1, with inversion (Weder hat er angerufen …); zwar and einerseits take position 1 or the middle field (Die Wohnung ist zwar klein) — all standard.
- In je … desto/umso the je-clause is subordinate and normally comes first: comparative straight after je, conjugated verb at the end. desto (or umso) plus its comparative then fills position 1 of the main clause.
With two singular subjects sowohl … als auch takes a plural verb; after weder … noch singular and plural are both correct, the plural being more common today. weder … noch is itself negative — never add nicht or kein.
Commas: none inside sowohl … als auch and weder … noch joining phrases (weder Zeit noch Lust); required before sondern and aber and between the je- and the desto-clause; with entweder … oder between two main clauses optional but usually set.

Singular or plural after sowohl … als auch and weder … noch?
With two singular subjects, sowohl … als auch takes a plural verb: Sowohl mein Bruder als auch meine Schwester wohnen in Berlin. After weder … noch both are correct — Weder mein Bruder noch meine Schwester hat Zeit. and … haben Zeit. — and the plural is the more common choice today.
Do I need an extra nicht or kein with weder … noch?
No, the pair is already negative: Ich habe weder Zeit noch Lust. A second negation is not standard German. When noch opens a new clause, the conjugated verb follows it directly: Weder hat er angerufen, noch hat er eine Nachricht geschrieben.
Does entweder come before or after the verb?
Both are standard: Entweder wir nehmen den Zug, oder wir fahren mit dem Auto. (entweder in position 0) and Entweder nehmen wir den Zug, oder wir fahren mit dem Auto. (position 1, with inversion). The second half oder sits in position 0 and never causes inversion.
Why is it desto nervöser werde ich and not desto ich werde nervöser?
Because desto plus the comparative form one block in position 1, so the conjugated verb keeps second place. The je-clause is a subordinate clause with the verb at the end: Je länger ich warte, desto nervöser werde ich. umso can replace desto without any change in meaning.
Is it nicht nur …, aber auch?
No. The German pair is nicht nur … sondern auch, with an obligatory comma before sondern: Sie spricht nicht nur Französisch, sondern auch Russisch. Inside sowohl … als auch and weder … noch joining phrases, by contrast, no comma is set. Two variants worth knowing: in zwar … aber the aber may be replaced by doch or jedoch, and sowohl … wie auch is correct beside sowohl … als auch.
